Welcome
We would like to welcome you to the Warren Nursing care home and we hope this page will help inform you of the facilities provided.
We want you, your friends and your family to always find a warm welcome here and we hope that you will look upon The Warren as your home whilst you are with us
The Warren is a privately owned and run nursing care home set in its own grounds, situated in Northam. The property, being acquired in February 2001, has undergone extensive alterations and a complete renovation to bring it up to its present high standard but still retaining its friendly, homely status.
Leaving a relative in a nursing home can sometimes feel like they are being abandoned and relatives may feel guilty in handing over care of their loved ones to someone else. This is quite a normal reaction and of course visitors are welcome at any time within reason. If anyone feels they would like to continue to help with the care of their relative in anyway we are always happy to accommodate this. Laura Hobbs, the Manager, will be happy to discuss this with you.
The Warren offers residency for both male and female residents over the age of 65. We can offer nursing care, day care or respite care for potential residents with a variety of physical illnesses and general frailty. However, we are unable to facilitate individuals with mental illness.
Home Layout
The home offers 30 nursing and 2 residential beds, all individually furnished, with double-glazing, controlled central heating, call bell system, wash-basins and optional colour television. Individuals may prefer to bring their own, along with small items of their own furniture, ornaments, photographs, etc. Please ensure that all personal items are marked clearly with the resident's name and added to the inventory upon admission.
Prior to admission the Manager or her deputy will discuss the daily running of the home with the potential residents and their families affording the opportunity to reassure them regarding any doubts or concerns they may have.
On admission and following consultation with the resident and their representative, if wished, a written Plan of Care will be made which will cover how needs in respect of health and welfare will be met. Depending on individual needs, it is reviewed daily or weekly, followed up by a overall monthly review. Discussion with the resident will take place should any changes be required.
Once admitted to The Warren, all nursing patients will be visited by the local Primary Care nurse to ascertain at what qualifying band the service user will be assessed for their nursing care only.
As far as possible, residents retain their own doctor. If coming to us from out of the area, we will register them either with Northam Surgery or another doctor in the area chosen by the resident or their relatives. Doctors do not visit routinely, but always come if called by a member of staff.
Personal
Residents are encouraged to bring their own belongings such as pictures and ornaments.
The general contents of the room will be covered by insurance but valuable personal items need to be insured separately.
All personal laundry is undertaken on the premises. Clothing must be marked with the owners' name. We can order the name-tapes and sew them on if relatives are unable to do so. Any new items purchased while the resident is with us must also be marked.
We always take great care with our residents' possessions, but accidents do inevitably happen. If an item gets damaged or lost, it will be replaced, however, we would request that items of sentimental value or of a delicate nature are not included in the residents' personal laundry.
Meals & Refreshment
Home cooking is provided with the emphasis on fresh meat and vegetables daily with a balanced diet for all. Produce is supplied by the local shops. Main meals are served in the Dining Room, however residents may have their meals served in their room and help is always available for the more dependant resident.
Social Background
We are very keen to get to know the people that we care for. It helps us to create a strong rapport with them and makes them feel part of "the family". With this in mind, it would be really helpful if the resident or relatives could write or tell us a summary of their life. Things such as past employment, hobbies, lifestyle, any interesting facts that we can talk to them about. This helps both us as well as encouraging the resident to use his or her memory. It gives them their own identity within the family group.
It is especially important to know how the resident wishes to be addressed. Some people prefer to keep things formal, whilst others are happy for their first name or a nick-name to be used.
Staff
The owners Jackie and Robert Thisby, are a local couple who are both actively involved in the running of the care home. The Manager, Laura Hobbs, deals with the day to day running of the home. She heads a team of care assistants, chefs, domestics and maintenance staff.
Laura has been nursing since 1976 and qualified as an RGN in 1978. During her career, she has gained wide and varied experience in all aspects of nursing and continues to keep abreast of current nursing practice.
There is at least one trained nurse on duty at all times. Staff work in a team comprising of Trained Staff and Care Assistants, some of whom are trained up to City & Guilds NVQ Care Level 3.
Our Activities Organiser, Carol Kidby, has been here at The Warren since 1994. Carol is able to provide for individual needs or group entertainment. Service users wishing to engage in any social activities, hobbies or leisure interest may discuss this with Carol or any of the nursing team.
