We would like to welcome you to the Golden Sands care home and we hope this page will help inform you of the facilities provided.

The Golden Sands is a privately owned and run care home set in its own grounds, situated in the centre of Westward Ho! The property, being acquired in February 2001, has undergone extensive alterations and a complete renovation to bring it up to its present high standard but still retaining its friendly, homely status.

It is situated close to a bus stop, post office, chemist and church together with local shops within an easy level walk. The magnificent seafront and beach are just around the corner and can be viewed from the home.

Home Layout

The resident’s rooms are located on the first floor which has easy access via a lift or by the stairs and along the landing is a "stannah" chair lift. The rooms consist of 14 single occupancy with one double occupancy.

They are all comfortably furnished and individually decorated, giving a light but warm ambience throughout; together with controlled central heating and double glazing. All rooms have wash basins, remote controlled television, telephone point and a call bell system. Five rooms have en-suite facilities. There are two bathrooms, one having a specialised disabled bath, one specialised disabled shower room and four toilets.

On the ground floor there are two lounges, the Red Lounge has a 48 inch television with sky and video systems. The Green Lounge is a dedicated room for those who like to read, or listen to music on the entertainment system. A large tropical fish tank is in the Green Lounge for residents pleasure. Adjoining the Green Lounge is the Dining room, a light spacious room where residents are encouraged to dine together.

Leading from the Dining Room is an attractive new 35 foot conservatory for the residents to relax in. Surrounding the conservatory are landscaped gardens with a water feature and garden seats where garden lovers may take pleasure.

Personal

Residents are encouraged to bring their own belongings such as pictures and ornaments. Small pets, birds or fish for example, may be kept by prior arrangement.

The general contents of the room will be covered by insurance but valuable personal items need to be insured separately.

All personal laundry is carried out on the premises.

Meals & Refreshment

Home cooking is provided with the emphasis on fresh meat and vegetables daily with a balanced diet for all. Produce is supplied by the local shops. Main meals are served in the Dining Room, however residents may have their meals served in their room and help is always available for the more dependant resident.

Social Background

Residents are encouraged to regard the Golden Sands as their own home, to come and go around the house, gardens and vicinity as they please. There are no restrictions as long as this is consistent with their own safety and the interest of others. We hope we succeed in providing a happy, friendly, family atmosphere within a well run establishment.

If anyone has any complaints (or compliments) we follow a recognised procedure. Please inform the Manager, the complaint will be written in a special book and dealt with as soon as is practical.

As far as possible residents retain their own doctor. If coming from outside the area we register them either with Northam surgery or another doctor in the area chosen by the relatives. Doctors do not visit routinely but always come if called by a member of staff.

Staff

The owners Jackie and Robert Thisby, are a local couple who are both actively involved in the running of the care home. The Manager, Mandy Bateman, deals with the day to day running of the home. She heads a team of care assistants, chefs, domestics and maintenance staff.

The only "extras" charged are for such things as personal newspapers, magazines, chiropody, hairdressing or stamps etc.

For calls to residents please call 01237 472844, one of the staff will alert the resident and either place the phone in their room or have them ready to receive the call.

It is possible for the residents to have their own private line installed at their own expense.
